In September we will walk along the Shropshire Union Canal into Chester.
As part of the canal towpath is currently closed, we have had to revise the walk slightly. The newer description is given below.
This is an easy flat walk, accessible by bus, with quite varied surroundings. The route is about 3½ miles long.
We plan to take the Stagecoach Bus 1 to The Brewers Arms, Upton, cross Liverpool Road, then walk along a bridleway and field paths onto the canal towpath at Knolls Bridge. From there we follow a mix of cinder track, tarmac path and a few cobblestones along the towpath to Chester boatyard and the staircase locks. Then we leave the canal itself, walk up to Northgate Street and finish at Chester Market. Later we go to Chester Bus Interchange to catch a bus back to Ellesmere Port.
Note: if you feel nervous walking on a narrow path next to water, this walk may not suit you!
Hazards
The towpath has the canal to the side, and the bridleway section can be muddy. Boots are not required, but strong trainers or walking shoes are recommended in case of puddles and for comfort on the cobbles and lane.
We need to take the 09:40 Stagecoach Bus No 1 from Ellesmere Port Bus Interchange stand C, which should get us to The Brewers Arms (formerly The Frog) near Upton Lane, Upton, by 10:11.. If you need a lift to the Bus Interchange, please let us know.
To return from Chester to Ellesmere Port we can use the Stagecoach No 1, X1 or 2 buses. If you wish, you can stay in Chester and return in your own time.
Please contact us about lifts to Ellesmere Port if you need one, or if you can offer a lift to someone else. It is possible to catch the No. 1 bus either before or after Ellesmere Port of course.
Toilets and Café
There are toilets at Chester market and at Chester Bus Station, and in various shops, pubs and cafes in Chester. We expect to reach Chester around 12:30, which means we will not get back to Ellesmere Port until about 1.30pm; you may wish to bring sandwiches or buy lunch in town.
